Postmatch Quotes Northwestern 4, Purdue 1 Saturday, May 13 Combe Tennis Center

    Northwestern Head Coach Claire Pollard

    On the Match...
"They were very impressive. You know, in doubles we were in control the whole way, but the singles, wow, they played excellent tennis. It's good for the Big Ten, and hopefully that's a good sign of things to come."

On Georgia Rose playing No. 1 singles...
"It was just a gut feeling really. I think we have two No. 1 players, but I thought that with us going out in the heat Georgia, had an edge. I think we have as good of a one-two-three punch as there is out there. I just have to put them in order, I wish I didn't. We're not really caught up in the numbers, we're caught up in having a great team."

Looking Ahead to the round of 16...
"I think we have some confidence going in. We've been shooting the whole year toward getting out of the round of 16, now we got there. We'll put our focus in that, and hopefully we can get it done."

    Purdue Head Coach Mat Iandolo

    On the match...
"It's just a tough matchup for us because where we're strong, Northwestern is strong, and probably even a little stronger. That makes it tough in singles and doubles. I thought we played pretty good offense in doubles, but particularly in No. 1--you think of them as an offensive team, Grier and Prousis--but they can play as good of defense as any team in the country."

On the impact of the Harvard match...
"I didn't think we played badly today, we just went up against a team that is better than us right now. They are the standard with which you measure greatness in the Midwest. If you want to be a great team, you have to go through Northwestern."

Did your team exceed your expectations...
"I would say compared to the last time we played, we gave them a good match. You don't want to be satisfied with that, but you don't want to beat yourself up over it either. We finished the year with three freshman and two sophomores, and we have something to build on."

    Northwestern Freshman Georgia Rose

On the rest of the season...
"Every single person has to come out and play a really good match. There's no room for error now. So, yes, we're going to be ready."

    On playing No. 1 singles...
"It's still a point for the team, I'm happy to be playing No.1. I like representing the team, every match is going to be tough, it doesn't matter where you play."

On the third set of today's match...
"I lose a quick second set so I knew I had to get on top in the third. If something went wrong on the other courts, I wanted to be in a good situation if it did come down to me. I got ahead two games, and I think I was in good position at the end of the match, (Cristelle Grier) just got it done first."
