EVANSTON -- Northwestern junior and No. 1 singles player Kate Turvy will represent the Wildcats in the singles competition at the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. She will be joined in Georgia by Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton, who will pair up for the doubles competition.
Turvy occupied the No. 1 slot in Northwestern's singles lineup for the duration of the regular season. The Dublin, Ohio, native posted 16 singles wins in dual play, including eight against Big Ten opponents. The Wildcat is one of three players from the Big Ten in the 64-player field, joining automatic qualifier Emina Bektas of Michigan and Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska. Turvy defeated Bektas in their only meeting this season and went 1-1 against Weatherholt.
In total, Turvy has faced 13 of the other 63 players in the field at some point this season. She is 8-6 in those matches. Weatherholt is the only possible opponent that Turvy has faced twice this year.
Though they have been split up at times this spring for the betterment of the entire team, Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton will join forces once again in the doubles bracket at the NCAA Championships. The Wildcats are one of 32 teams selected for that competition this year.
In the fall, Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton made it all the way to the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships, where they were defeated by the eventual-champions from Southern California. NU's duo has notched 15 total wins this season.
The singles and doubles competitions begin following the conclusion of the team championship on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Abu Mushrefova, Hamilton, Turvy and their Northwestern teammates will host first and second round matches May 11-12. The 'Cats welcome Akron to the Vandy Christie Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. match on Friday, May 11. That contest will follow another opening round affair between Notre Dame and Hawaii at 11 a.m. The two winning teams will play on Saturday, May 12 at noon with a spot in Athens in the top 16 at stake.
