Rose Named Big Ten Player of the Year; Three 'Cats Earn All-Conference Honors

2007 All-Big Ten Honorees MINNEAPOLIS -- Sophomore Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) won Player of Year, Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) was named Freshman of the Year and senior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) earned her third career All-Big Ten honor, the conference office announced Thursday evening. NU has won every Player of the Year since 2002 and this is the third-straight year a Wildcat has been the Big Ten's top freshman. Rose, who was the conference's top freshman in 2006, compiled a 15-2 overall and perfect 5-0 conference record. Week in and week out, Rose continued to lead the Big Ten as the top-ranked singles player with eight wins over nationally ranked opponents. Currently, Rose is ranked 13th in the latest ITA poll headed into the tournament weekend. Murray, who is the third-striaight Northwestern player to earn Freshman of the Year honors, has posted a 14-8 dual record and was 7-3 in the Big Ten. Murray played mostly at No. 2 where she went 11-6 overall. Prousis was named All-Big Ten for the third time in her career. The senior, who won an NCAA doubles championship in 2006, has enjoyed a stellar year on the doubles court. Prousis and Rose are 13-3 in duals and compiled a 5-1 Big Ten record. The nation's 10th-ranked pair is 7-1 against ranked opponents. Northwestern led the conference with three All-Big Ten selections. Rose and Murray were unanimous selections. The conference office also announced honorees from each team for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, with Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) being chosen as NU's nominee. The Wildcats' quest for their record-tying ninth-straight Big Ten title resumes Friday at 10 a.m. as the top-seeded 'Cats take on Penn State at the Baseline Tennis Center.
