Big Ten Championship Women's Tennis Bracket
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Top-ranked Northwestern clinched its eighth Big Ten regular season title in the past ten years on Saturday, and hopes to continue its in-conference domination at the Big Ten Championship this weekend. The Wildcats will face the winner of the No. 8 seed Minnesota and the No. 9 seed Purdue at 9 a.m. (8 a.m. indoors in case of inclement weather) Friday, April 25.
With an opportunity to win their record-breaking tenth-consecutive Big Ten Championship, the Wildcats are just three wins away from making history. Northwestern has won the Big Ten title each year under Head coach Claire Pollard's reign. On Saturday, Pollard improved to 94-6 in regular season conference play, and 125-6 including the post-season.
The 'Cats closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 7-0 victory over Michigan State. The win clinched sole possession of the regular season title for Northwestern, and secured its fourth-consecutive 10-0 conference finish.
The Wildcats enter the Big Ten Championship on a 60-match conference winning streak. They have not lost a match, including post-season play, to a Big Ten opponent since April 2004.
Northwestern earned its first-ever No. 1 national ranking this season, and has held the top spot for eight-consecutive weeks. The 'Cats closed out the regular season with a 23-1 overall dual record, the best in Pollard's ten-year tenure.
Several of the Wildcats will enter the Big Ten Championship with impressive streaks in tact. Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine), Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia/No. 204), Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinakid) and Keri Robison (Decatur, Ill./Keystone National) are each undefeated in Big Ten dual singles this season. Lui and Ghazal also boast impressive match winning streaks of 17 and 12, respectively.
The Big Ten Championship will take place at the Schwartz Tennis Center on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., April 24-27. For schedules, results and other tournament information, please visit the Big Ten Championship Website
