EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern returns to Big Ten play this weekend as it hosts Minnesota on Saturday and Wisconsin on Sunday.

Both matches are slated to get underway at 11 a.m. at Vandy Christie Tennis Center. Action would move indoors to Combe Tennis Center in case of inclement weather.

A year ago, the Wildcats defeated the Golden Gophers 5-2 in Minneapolis and the Badgers 6-1 in Madison.

NU is looking to break a string of three straight tough losses, each by a 4-3 score. Most recently, the 'Cats surged out in front of Georgia Tech 3-1 on Wednesday in Atlanta before the Yellow Jackets rallied back for the win. Northwestern captured the doubles point in the contest before Kate Turvy and Nida Hamilton notched singles victories. The Wildcats competed without Belinda Niu who missed the match due to illness.

Junior Veronica Corning was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Wednesday. It was the first such honor of her career. Corning earned the award based on her performance against top-ranked North Carolina last Sunday. She earned a win in doubles with Alicia Barnett before handing 23rd-ranked Whitney Kay her first dual meet loss of the season with a three-set victory.

Minnesota enters Saturday's match with records identical to Northwestern at 8-7 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play. The Golden Gophers had a six-match winning streak snapped in a 6-1 home loss to Michigan last Sunday. Minnesota holds Big Ten wins over Michigan State and Wisconsin so far this season.

Wisconsin takes a 3-11 overall mark and a 1-2 conference mark into Friday's match at Illinois. Two of the Badgers' wins have come in their last three matches as they defeated UIC, 6-1, and Michigan State, 5-2. The team's nine-player roster is comprised of six freshmen.
