EVANSTON, Ill - The Big Ten Conference named Northwestern senior Veronica Corning its Player of the Week on Tuesday. The award is Corning's third of the 2014 season.
Corning led the Wildcats to a 7-0 shutout victory over No. 26 Georgia Tech last Friday night.
Corning and Alicia Barnett highlighted the `Cats win with an upset of the No. 2 doubles tandem in the country. The Yellow Jackets duo of Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey came into the match with an 8-2 record, but Corning and Barnett eased past by an 8-3 score.
In singles play, Corning won in straight-sets over Natasha Prokhnevska at No. 1, 6-2, 7-5, to extend her winning streak to four matches. Her win provided the clinching point for NU.
The weekly award is the fourth of Corning's career and the third of this season. She was named conference player of the week on Jan. 29 and again on Feb. 25. Corning is one of two players in the conference to be honored three times this season. Emina Bektas of Michigan is the other.
Currently ranked No. 36 by the ITA in singles play, Corning has compiled an 8-4 mark in the No. 1 singles spot. The duo of Corning and Barnett is ranked No. 47 with a record of 6-4.
The ninth-ranked Wildcats are in the midst of a mid-week road trip in North Carolina with matches against No. 10 North Carolina and No. 1 Duke. NU returns home this weekend to face Ohio State on Saturday and Penn State on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
