EVANSTON, Ill. - For the second time this season, Veronica Corning has been named the Big Ten Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week. The conference announced its recognition of Corning on Tuesday.

The senior notched wins in both singles and doubles play to help lead Northwestern to a 7-0 shutout of No. 37 Indiana in Bloomington last Thursday.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Corning snapped a four-match losing streak by defeating No. 65 Katie Klyczek 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. The win marked Corning's fifth against a ranked opponent in 2014. She also teamed with Alicia Barnett at No. 1 doubles to handle Klyczek and Carolyn Chupa 8-3.

The weekly award is the third of Corning's career and the second in this season. She was honored as Big Ten Player of the Week on Jan. 29 for her efforts during the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

Corning is one of four `Cats nationally ranked in singles play. She currently sits at No. 49 and is joined by Belinda Niu (No. 37), Maddie Lipp (No. 97) and Jillian Rooney (No. 110). The doubles tandem of Corning and Barnett is ranked No. 30 nationally.

The seventh-ranked Wildcats continue Big Ten play when they host Purdue on Saturday at the Combe Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
