Newly ranked in the top 10, the Northwestern women's tennis team hosts a pair of highly ranked foes at Combe Tennis Center this weekend.
The Wildcats square off against No. 14 Texas at 4 p.m. Friday before taking on No. 19 Baylor at 11 a.m. Sunday. The opponents will be the ninth and 10th teams that Northwestern has faced that are ranked in the top 40 of the ITA team rankings in as many matches this season.
NU moved up to No. 9 in the ITA team rankings earlier this week after taking down then-No. 19 Notre Dame 5-2 last Sunday. The No. 3 doubles team of Belinda Niu and Kate Turvy rallied from a 7-4 deficit to win a tiebreak, giving the 'Cats the always important doubles point. Northwestern then got victories from Niu, Veronica Corning, Linda Abu Mushrefova and Alicia Barnett in singles action to clinch the win.
Turvy is ranked No. 41 nationally in singles, while Niu is No. 83. The team of Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton is ranked No. 15 in doubles.
Texas (2-3) has been off from competition since dropping all three of its matches against Georgia, Texas A&M and Alabama at the ITA Team Indoor Championship Feb. 8-10. The Longhorns have a pair of highly ranked singles players in No. 29 Aeriel Ellis and No. 39 Breaunna Addison, while the doubles pairing of Addison and Noel Scott is ranked No. 24. Texas returns six individuals from last year's team which finished the season ranked No. 10 by the ITA while advancing to the round of 16 of the NCAA Championship.
Baylor (4-5) posted a 6-1 win over No. 46 Pepperdine last Sunday. Ema Burgic leads the Bears in singles with a No. 13 national ranking. Megan Horter is the other Baylor player with a national ranking, entering play this weekend at No. 86. Burgic teams with Jordaan Sanford in doubles for a ranking of No. 41. The Bears play at No. 22 Notre Dame on Saturday prior to coming to Evanston.
