EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team, fresh off moving up to the No. 7 spot in the ITA National Team Rankings, will embark on a weekend road trip to the state of Texas to take on two highly ranked squads.
On Saturday, the Wildcats will match up with No. 17 Texas at noon in Austin before traveling to Waco to face No. 18 Baylor at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The matches will mark the seventh and eighth in a row that Northwestern has played against top-30 opponents to open the 2014 season.
NU made the biggest jump of any top team in the ITA poll, which was released on Feb. 11. After knocking off a pair of top-10 teams at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships last weekend the `Cats jumped into the top 10, moving from 16th to No. 7.
For the entirety of the fall season and the beginning of the 2014 campaign, Northwestern had just one nationally ranked singles player. Now, the Wildcats boast five. Veronica Corning started the season with four straight wins over ranked players. For her efforts, Corning went from unranked to No. 30. Belinda Niu has posted a 3-0 record so far in 2014 and moved up 47 spots from No. 105 to now being ranked No. 58.
A pair of NU freshmen find themselves in the national rankings for the first time. Jillian Rooney is No. 92, while Maddie Lipp comes in No. 104. Lok Sze Leung is the fifth Wildcat to earn a spot in this week's poll as she is No. 109.
In doubles play, the Wildcats' No. 1 doubles tandem of Corning and Alicia Barnett has amassed a 2-2 record and moved up 10 spots in the poll to No. 25.
The Longhorns enter the weekend with a 3-4 record, which includes a rough 0-3 performance at the ITA National Duals. Last season, Texas and Northwestern matched up in Evanston, and the Longhorns prevailed with a 5-2 victory. Texas has two nationally-ranked singles players. Breaunna Addison is No. 24 and has compiled a 4-3 mark at No. 1 singles this season. Ratnika Batra finds herself ranked 77th while putting together a 3-1 singles record in 2014.
Baylor is 7-1 this season with the lone loss coming to Florida. The squads are familiar with each other as Northwestern matched up with the Bears twice last season. The Wildcats won the regular season dual 4-1 before knocking off Baylor again in the NCAA Tournament 4-2. Kiah Generette is the lone-ranked singles player for the Bears, coming in at No. 59.
