EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team is headed to Charlottesville, Va. this weekend for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia. The 27th-annual event runs from Friday, Feb. 7 through Monday, Feb. 10 and will take place at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

The Wildcats meet 2013 NCAA runner-up Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the opening Round of 16. The Aggies are the tournament's eighth-seed. The winner of that match would face either the tournament's highest seed in Florida or host school Virginia.

Northwestern earned its trip to Charlottesville by claiming shutout victories over No. 29 Oklahoma State and No. 26 Arizona State. Belinda Niu represents the `Cats in the national rankings as the 105th-ranked player in singles. The doubles tandem of Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett is ranked No. 35.

Corning is leading the Wildcats from the No. 1 spot in singles play, amassing a 3-0 record during the 2014 season with all three wins over ranked opponents in straight sets. She was named the Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Jan. 29.

Texas A&M enters this weekend's tournament as the No. 7 team in the nation, according to the ITA rankings. The Aggies are 3-0 on the season, including a 4-3 road win at No. 3 North Carolina on Tuesday. Texas A&M is led by Cristina Stancu, the No. 14-ranked singles player in the country. Stancu also teams up with Stefania Hristov to make up the No. 22-ranked doubles team. The duo of Rutuja Bhosale and Ines Deheza come in at No. 51.

The two squads last met on Jan. 29, 2005 in College Station, Texas, in a match that Northwestern won 5-2. NU is 6-1 all-time against Texas A&M.

The Wildcats have won the championship at this event twice. NU did it in consecutive years in 2009 and 2010.
