EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern opens up its 2013 spring season this weekend as it travels to Charlottesville, Va., to participate in the University of Virginia Winter Invitational.

The Wildcats enter the winter and spring at No. 13 in the ITA team rankings.

The invitational will crown individual champions in singles and doubles, as no team scoring will be used. Each player will be assigned points per win and loss according to her position in singles and doubles. The players with the most points at the end of the weekend will be named the singles and doubles winners.

NU faces challenging competition all weekend long. The 'Cats are slated to take on the host and 12th-ranked Cavaliers on Saturday before squaring off against No. 34 Utah on Sunday and No. 23 Tennessee on Monday.

Individually, Kate Turvy is ranked No. 67, while the doubles team of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton is ranked No. 42. Turvy and Belinda Niu were first-team All-Big Ten selections a year ago, while Brittany Wowchuk was a second-team pick.

Northwestern won the Big Ten regular-season title for the 12th time in 14 years in 2012 while advancing to the third round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships.
