With the 2012 campaign set to kick off later this month, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its singles, doubles and team rankings Tuesday. Northwestern's top doubles tandem of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton is ranked No. 6 in the country, while Kate Turvy is the 26th-ranked singles player and Brittany Wowchuk checks in at No. 86.

Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central), ranked No. 6, are coming off a successful fall campaign in which the duo reached the semifinal round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November. The 'Cats fell to the eventual champions from Southern California, Sabrina Santamaria and Kaitlyn Christian. That pair is ranked No. 3 overall in the latest rankings. Last season, Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton earned All-American honors upon reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA doubles championship.

Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) is ranked No. 26 in the singles listing. In the preseason rankings, Turvy checked in at No. 56. In late October she reached the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships and earlier in the month Turvy cruised through the qualifying draw to earn a spot in the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles.

The Ohio native finished the 2010-11 season ranked No. 76 by the ITA after compiling an impressive record of 32-9 in singles play, primarily at the third and fourth positions. Turvy was an All-Big Ten selection last season.

Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Oakville Trafalgar) joins Turvy in the singles rankings at No. 86. The junior capped a strong fall season with a runner-up finish at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Wowchuk fell in the championship match at that event to Michigan's Emina Bektas, 6-4, 6-2. Bektas, who defeated Turvy in the semifinals of that event, is currently ranked No. 36.

Wowchuk was a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree last season after securing 21 victories in singles play for the Wildcats. She finished the campaign ranked No. 84 in the country. In addition, she paired with Elena Chernyakova (Moscow, Russia/No. 150) to 15 of 17 doubles matches.

In the Midwest region, comprised of schools from Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and the northern sections of Indiana and Ohio, Turvy is ranked No. 2, Wowchuk No. 3, Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) No. 14 and Abu Mushrefova No. 19. Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton are the second-ranked doubles team in the region.

As a team, Northwestern enters 2012 ranked 12th by the ITA. That is the same spot that the Wildcats held at the conclusion of the 2010-11 campaign. The 'Cats will lift the lid on 2012 on Friday, January 13 at the Wildcat Spring Invitational. That event continues through Sunday, January 15 at the newly resurfaced Combe Indoor Tennis Center.
