Women's Tennis Nearly Sweeps Penn State
Wildcats earn second Big Ten win
EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 22 Wildcat women's tennis team (6-6, 2-2) defeated Penn State, 6-1, earning its second Big Ten win on Sunday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center. The 'Cats also advanced to a 7-0 series lead over the Nittany Lions in today's match, which marked their seventh meeting.
NU nearly swept the singles portion by winning five of six matches. Playing at the No. 1 spot, Wildcat sophomore Katherine Nasser, ranked No. 59 nationally, defeated Penn State's Pilar Montgomery, 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Shannon Duffy, ranked No. 34 nationally, rallied to win at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Colleen Cheng, junior Robyn Porter and sophomore Jennifer Lutgert also won sets for the Wildcats.
Northwestern also dominated in the doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Nasser and Cheng remained undefeated in Big Ten competition (3-0, Big Ten; 6-1, overall) with their 8-4 win over the 24th-ranked Penn State duo of Montgomery and Barnett.
The Wildcats will travel to San Diego, Calif. for matches against San Diego State and BYU on March 24-27, 1998.
