No. 22 Northwestern Falls to No. 50 Purdue, 4-3
The Wildcats women's tennis team (5-5, 1-2 Big Ten), ranked No.22
nationally, suffered a closely contested match to the No. 50 Purdue
Boilermakers (3-3, 1-0 Big Ten) Sunday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis
Center.
Sophomore Katherine Nasser (59th, ITA) and freshman Shannon Duffy (34th,
ITA) won the top two singles matches. Nasser, playing at the No. 1 spot,
took a 6-1, 7-5 decsion over Mary Beth Maggart. Second-seeded Shanon Duffy
defeated Purdue's Jennifer Embry 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Northwestern nearly pulled
off the win as sophomore Leigh Weinraub rallied back and forth in the final
set with Hally Cohen, ultimately losing 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
NU swept the doubles portion, winning all three matches. The No. 1 doubles
team of Nasser and freshman Colleen Cheng boosted their overall record to
5-0, 2-0 Big Ten, after downing Maggart and Embry, 9-7.
The Wildcats travel to South Bend to take on Notre Dame on March 7, at 3:30
p.m. The Cats' will return home to host the Penn State Nittany Lions on
March 8 at 10 a.m.
