    Singles Draw

    TEMPE, Ariz. -- Four members of Northwestern's women's tennis team began play at the Thunderbird Invitational, hosted by Arizona State University at the Whitman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday.

    The first two rounds of the singles draw took place in the desert on Friday. A pair of Wildcats, Brittany Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) and Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) won their matches in the round of 32. Wowchuk bested San Diego's Anna Depenau, 6-4. 7-5. Turvy triumphed over another San Diego player, Laura Claus, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

    Turvy was victorious again in the round of 16, where she defeated a Big Ten foe, Ohio State's Gabby Steele, 6-4, 6-2. Wowchuk fell in her second match of the day to Cal's Zsofi Susanyi, 6-3, 6-0.

    Freshman Anna Livadaru (Berlin, Germany/Boca Prep) and Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) both came up short in their opening rounds matches in the main singles draw.
