COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After a successful run through the main doubles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday, Northwestern's women's tennis team continued to pile up wins as he focus shifted to singles play on Saturday.

Saturday morning actually began with the round of 16 in the main draw of the doubles championship and two of NU's entries advanced once again. After narrowly escaping the round of 32 with a win Friday, the tournament's top-seeded team of Wildcats Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Nida Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) beat Eastern Michigan's duo of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke, 8-6. Mushrefova and Hamilton, ranked No. 3 in the Campbell's ITA preseason doubles rankings, will face Notre Dame's Chrissie McGaffigan and Jennifer Kellner in the quarterfinal round Sunday at 8 a.m.

Brittany Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) and Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) teamed up for another victory Saturday, as well. After knocking off Western Michigan's team of Maria Nivia and April Kerr on Friday, the 'Cats defeated Ohio State's Kelsey Haviland and Noelle Malley on their home court, 8-3. They will also play a team from Notre Dame on Sunday morning, Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews at 8 a.m. Frilling and Matthews are the second seed in the draw and No. 5 overall in the ITA rankings.

Northwestern was met with mixed results as the round of 48 in the singles draw began later in the day. Mushrefova knocked off Kelsey Dieters from Ohio State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. After posting a pair of victories to qualify for the main draw, Natalie Edell (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake) came up short against instate foe Allison Falkin from Illinois, 6-0, 6-0. NU's Stacey Lee (Old Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was bested in her match with Gabby Steele from Ohio State, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Anna Livadaru (Berlin, Germany/Boca Prep) also came up short in her match against another Buckeye, Fidan Manashirova, 6-2, 7-6.

Later in the round of 32, Wowchuk blanked her opponent, Chrissy Coffman from Toledo, 6-0, 6-0. Her doubles partner, Niu, was also victorious in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, over Illinois' Melissa Kopinski. Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) was also victorious in the round of 32 as she helped avenge Edell's early loss by defeating Falkin, 6-3, 6-1.

Mushrefova ran out of steam in her third match of the day versus Marisa Lambropoulus as she stumbled in the tightly contested match, 6-2, 7-5.
