    Three 'Cats Move On to Round of 16 in ITA Regional Singles

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Veronica Corning, Belinda Niu and Kate Turvy all won their first match in the singles main draw Saturday to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Midwest Regionals hosted by the University of Illinois.

    All three players had opening-round byes before posting straight-set victories. Turvy, the No. 2 seed, defeated Hannah Berner of Wisconsin 6-4, 6-2. Niu cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over UIC's Haley Craig, while Corning had little trouble with Akron's Angelina Jogasuria, posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

    Nida Hamilton did not receive an opening-round bye, but defeated Lauren Chypyha of Wisconsin 6-2, 6-1. However, she fell to Amy Zhu of Michigan in three sets in the next round, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. Linda Abu Mushrefova also won her opening round match, 6-0, 6-4 over Rachel White of Illinois, before coming up just short against DePaul's Patricia Fargas 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

    In doubles action, top-seeded Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton marched on to the quarterfinals with an easy 8-2 win over the Notre Dame team of Molly O'Koniewski/Katherine White. The eight-seeded duo of Corning and Niu also moved on to the quarters with an 8-4 win over Jasmin Kling/Carolin Neumann from DePaul.

    Brittany Wowchuk and Alicia Barnett saw their doubles run come to an end as they fell to Kelsey Deiters/Kara Cecil from Ohio State 8-1.
