    Niu, Corning on to Quarterfinals in Singles Draw

    EVANSTON, Ill. – The field in the singles main draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships was narrowed from 16 to eight on Sunday afternoon, and Northwestern’s Belinda Niu and Veronica Corning are among those advancing to the quarterfinals.

    Niu dropped the first set to Jennifer Kellner of Notre Dame but came back strong, winning the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. She will face the No. 1 seed of the event, Michigan’s Emina Bektas in the quarterfinal round on Monday.

    Veronica Corning won her match handily against Alexis Casati of Illinois, 6-1, 6-3. Corning will face the field’s No. 3 seed, Ronit Yurovsky from Michigan. Alicia Barnett also competed in the Round of 16, but she fell to Melissa Kopinski of Illinois, 6-3, 6-3.

    Barnett and Corning are in position to win the doubles championship after a couple of great efforts Sunday morning. In the quarterfinals, they breezed through Melissa Kopinski and Allison Falkin of Illinois, 8-2. The semifinal matchup saw the NU duo against the doubles No. 1 seed Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender from Michigan. Barnett and Corning battled to an 8-6 victory and earned a trip to the championship match.

    They will face Michigan’s Ronit Yurovsky and Sarah Lee after that tandem defeated the ‘Cats Niu and Brooke Rischbieth, 8-3. Niu and Rischbieth advanced to the semifinals with an 8-6 decision over Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong of Illinois.

    The doubles championship will be held at 9 a.m. Monday. Singles quarterfinals are scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. with the semifinal round to follow.
