    EVANSTON, Ill. – Three veteran Northwestern players kept their hopes alive at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Michigan Saturday, advancing to the singles main draw Round of 16.

    Belinda Niu had a first round bye and followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jerricka Boone of Illinois. She will meet up against Jennifer Kellner from Notre Dame on Sunday after Kellner defeated Nida Hamilton 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. Hamilton won her first round match over Emmie Marx of Illinois State 6-2, 6-4.

    Alicia Barnett squared off against Eastern Michigan’s Nino Mebuke after receiving a first round bye and won handily, 6-1, 6-1. Veronica Corning was the other Wildcat to move on with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Olga Shkudina of Akron.

    Two other ‘Cats were in action Saturday in the singles draw. Jillian Rooney fell to DePaul’s Patricia Fargas after winning the first set, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Lok Sze Leung matched up with Britney Sanders of Notre Dame and lost 6-0, 6-0. 

    One round of doubles play was completed Saturday, narrowing the field from 16 to 8. Barnett and Corning continued their winning ways with an 8-3 victory over Ana Pimienta and Erin Gebes from Marquette. Niu and Brooke Rischbieth also moved on, setting down Ana Vladutu and Jasmin Kling of DePaul, 8-4. Hamilton and Maddie Lipp were narrowly beaten by Margarita Sadovnikova and Marta Burak of Youngstown State, 8-6.

    The Doubles Quarterfinals will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday with the semifinals to follow. The Singles Round of 16 will be held at 1 p.m.
