EVANSTON, Ill. -
Nida Hamilton won each of her two singles matches and teamed with Linda Abu Mushrefova for a doubles win to pace the Northwestern contingent on Friday's first day of the Wildcat Invitational.
Hamilton posted a hard-fought win over Lauren Burich from Wisconsin in her opening singles match, rallying from a set down to post a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory before defeating Christina Harazin from Iowa 6-3, 6-3 to reach Sunday's championship match.
Northwestern's four other singles entries all posted a 1-1 record on the day. Kate Turvy defeated Ruth Seaborne of Iowa 6-2, 6-3 before falling to Matea Cutura of DePaul 6-1, 6-3. Belinda Niu took her opening match from Lauren Chypyha of Wisconsin 6-4, 6-1 before falling to Jasmin Kling from DePaul.
Abu Mushrefova lost her first match 6-2, 7-5 to Hermon Brahane from Oklahoma before bouncing back to defeat Tereza Brichacova from Minnesota in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Alicia Barnett topped Patricia Fargas from DePaul 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 but will play for third place in her draw on Sunday after falling to Mia Lancaster from Oklahoma 6-3, 6-2.
All three of NU's doubles teams that played on Friday posted victories. Hamilton and Abu Mushrefova defeated the Chypyha/Hannah Berner team from Wisconsin 8-5, Niu and Anna Livadaru topped Julia Courter/Yuliana Umanets from Minnesota 8-3 and Turvy and Barnett teamed up to defeat the Shelby Talcott/Harazin team from Iowa 8-4.
Action at the Wildcat Invitational resumes at 11 a.m. Saturday with the final two doubles rounds.
