EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the second day of action at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Northwestern's Natalie Edell and Elizabeth Kobak came out on top in flight A doubles by defeating Western Michigan's April Kerr and Rachel Denny, 9-7. NU also picked up five wins in singles play.
Kobak also competed in flight A singles, winning her first match Saturday by knocking off Iowa's Cassandra Escobar, 6-1, 6-3. Kobak then faced Jana Knoppe of Illinois-Chicago, coming away with a 7-5, 6-3 win to advance to Sunday's flight A championship match against Wisconsin's Nicky Stracar.
In flight B, Edell posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory against UIC's Linda Hricistova to earn a match with Michigan State's Katarina Lingl in the consolation semifinals. Edell took the first set off Lingl but ultimately lost in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Nida Hamilton won her second match in as many days when she bested Wisconsin's Lauren Gruber, 6-3, 6-2, in flight C. Hamilton came up short in her bid to reach the flight C finals, falling to UIC's Elisa Simonetti, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Joining Hamilton with a win in flight C singles was Elena Chernyakova, who topped Michigan State's Olga Chernova, 6-2, 6-2. Chernyakova completed her 2-0 day when she defeated Big Ten foe Magdalena Wiecha of Minnesota, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-0.
The Wildcat Invitational concludes Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. Four singles matches will be played to complete the previous round cut short by darkness Saturday, with the final round of matches to begin at 9 a.m.
