    TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Linda Abu Mushrefova advanced to the championship match of her draw and teamed with Nida Hamilton to earn a double win to lead Northwestern on the first day of action at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.

    Abu Mushrefova posted a straight-sets win over Kentucky's Kirsten Lewis 6-4, 6-2 in her opening match before Paulina Schippers of Auburn retired in the next match with Abu Mushrefova leading 6-3, 2-1. With the two wins, she advances to Saturday's championship match of the draw against Tristen Dewar of Clemson.

    All three NU doubles team in action won their first match. Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton defeated the Milutinovic/Verboven duo from Mississippi, 8-3. They'll take on the Altick/Sellyn team from Vanderbilt in the semifinals of their draw on Saturday.

    The team of Belinda Niu and Alicia Barnett topped the team of Daniel/Moolman from UAB, 8-4, in their draw while Veronica Corning and Anna Livadaru advanced past the duo of Brand/Moraes from Middle Tennesse State, 8-6.

    In other singles action, Hamilton rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kentucky's Caitlin McGraw before falling to Vanderbilt's Georgiana Sellyn 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. She'll compete for third place in her draw on Saturday.

    Also, Barnett dropped her first match to Auburn's Emily Flickinger 6-3, 6-4 before bouncing back to defeat Samford's Kristin Lewis 7-5, 7-5 to earn a spot in the consolation final.

    Niu nearly pulled off a straight-sets win in her opening match but eventually fell to Auburn's Maria Cardenas 5-7, 7-6, 6-1. She then dropped her second match to Frances Altick of Vanderbilt 6-1, 6-2.



    The second and final day of the Roberta Alison Classic is slated for Saturday.

    Meanwhile, at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Kate Turvy was eliminated from the back draw in her first match on Friday, falling to Aleksandra Josifoska of UNLV 6-2, 6-3.
