EVANSTON, Ill. - Five Wildcats advanced through singles play in their respective flights on Friday to reach the final round of the Wildcat Invitational.
Veronica Corning posted a pair of hard-fought victories, first over Mia Lancaster of Oklahoma 6-2, 5-6 (3), 6-1 before defeating Natallia Pintusava from Minnesota 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. She will be paired against teammate Alicia Barnett in one championship match on Sunday. Barnett earned her way with wins over Katherine Flanigan of Princeton and Tereza Brichacova from Minnesota.
In another singles flight, Belinda Niu breezed into the championship round with a first round 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Morgan Chumney from Oklahoma. Niu followed that with a victory over Caryssa Peretz of Virginia 6-2, 6-3.
Jillian Rooney had a strong Northwestern debut, advancing to the championship round in her first day. Rooney defeated Emma Devine from Oklahoma 6-2, 6-3 before moving on to win against Jessika Mozia of Minnesota 6-1, 6-3. Another freshman, Manon Peri, earned a trip to her championship final as well, posting a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory against Nicole Martinez of North Carolina State and a 6-2, 6-0 win over Zita Engbroks from Oklahoma.
Four Wildcats put together 1-1 marks on Friday. Lok Sze Leung won her first match 6-5 (2), 6-2 over Edmée Morin-Kougoucheff of Kentucky. Leung lost a tough match in the next round to Alanna Wolff of Princeton 6-4, 6-2. Maddie Lipp defeated Julia Courter of Minnesota 6-4, 6-1 before falling to Marie Faure from Virginia in the second round 6-4, 6-2.
Brooke Rischbieth lost her first round match to Kirsten Lewis of Kentucky but followed that with a win over Paula Rincon Otero of Minnesota. Nida Hamilton was defeated in the first round by Emily Hahn from Princeton before posting a victory against Aria Lambert of Minnesota 6-3, 6-1.
Northwestern posted victories in three doubles play matches on Friday as well. Lipp and Hamilton paired up to defeat Pintusava and Courter of Minnesota 6-4. The NU duo of Peri and Niu topped Christy Sipes and Taylor Zaytoun of North Carolina State 6-1. Corning and Rischbieth teamed up and handled Sydney Rider and Lauren Burich of Wisconsin 6-1.
The tandem of Barnett and Leung was defeated by Aldila Sutjidai and Morin-Kougoucheff of Kentucky 6-1. Rooney partnered with Anastasia Tripolskaya of Wisconsin in an extra doubles match, and they fell to Katie Goepel and Emily Hahn from Princeton 6-5.
Wildcat Invitational action continues all day Saturday with the final two doubles rounds.
