    Wowchuk Advances to Third Round of All-American Prequalifying

    LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Northwestern freshman Brittany Wowchuk made a splash on day one of her first trip to the Riviera/All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. Wowchuk easily won her first two matches in the prequalifying bracket to set up a third-round match against either Paloma Escobedo of Ohio State or Kayla Duncan of TCU.

    Wowchuk opened her tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Maryia Meliuk of Sacramento State. In the second round, Wowchuk rolled again in a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Nebraska's Stephanie Weinstein to improve to 3-2. Her third-round match is slated to begin Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.

    Lauren Lui, ranked No. 89 in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis poll, lost her first-round match on Saturday to Maggie Mello of Texas, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

    The main draw of the All-American Championships, where NU's Maria Mosolova is the No. 1 overall seed, commences on Oct. 8. Mosolova reached the semifinals of this tournament as a sophomore in 2008.
