ATHENS, Ga. -- Northwestern's season officially came to a close Thursday afternoon when Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton fell in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships to Florida's Lauren Embree and Joanna Mather, 6-0, 6-1.
Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton were never able to gain traction in the early going against the Gator pair, dropping the first set, 6-0, and falling behind 3-0 in the second. The two 'Cats attempted to mount a comeback, cutting into the lead, 3-1, with their first win of the day, but Embree and Mather staved off any attempt and took the second set, 6-1.
NU's duo played together on-and-off throughout the season for the betterment of the entire team, finishing 15-10 together this season. In the fall the pair finished as runners-up to Notre Dame's Shannon Mathews and Kristy Frilling at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship. They also advanced to the semifinals of both the ITA All-American Championships and the ITA National Indoor Championships.
As a team, Northwestern finished the season with a 20-9 overall record, earning its 12th Big Ten title in 14 years under head coach Claire Pollard.
