ATHENS, Ga. -- Northwestern's Kate Turvy returned to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia Wednesday afternoon for the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship. Turvy, the 20th-ranked singles player in the country, was undone in her match against the defending NCAA singles champion, Jana Juricova, of California, 6-3, 6-1.
Turvy got off to a bit of a tumultuous start against the 2012 ITA National Senior Player of the Year. Juricova broke the serve of the Wildcat to start the match and took a 4-1 lead before Turvy began to gain a rhythm. The Dublin, Ohio, native notched her second break of the match and subsequently held serve to slice the deficit to one at 4-3. Unfortunately Turvy would come no closer in the first game as Juricova rattled off two straight winners to take the first set, 6-3.
Juricova, the sixth-overall seed in the tournament, continued to impose her style as the match moved into the second set. The Golden Bear opened up the stanza by winning two straight games before Turvy broke her serve to promptly climb back within one game. Again, that was as close as the NU junior would come as Juricova pushed her way onward to a 6-1 triumph in the second set to win the match.
Despite the outcome at UGA, Turvy had a junior season to remember. In her first season as the team's No. 1 singles player, Turvy was an All-Big Ten first team selection for the second consecutive year. She captured Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors on two occasions and Turvy helped the Wildcats capture their 12th Big Ten regular season championship in 14 years under head coach Claire Pollard
. She also posted nine wins over nationally ranked opponents during the dual season.
Two more Wildcats will be in action in Athens on Thursday. The doubles team of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton will begin its quest for a second straight All-America performance in the NCAA Doubles Championship against Florida's Lauren Embree and Joanna Mather tomorrow. Embree's win in singles play Tuesday against UCLA helped the Gators clinch their second consecutive NCAA Championship. She was also named the team tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
The match is scheduled to begin at approximately 5 p.m. CDT More information for the doubles tilt can be found below:
