ATHENS, Ga. -- Under a blazing sun at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, sophomore Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships by defeating Ilona Somers of Mississippi, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altinrcham England) fell to California's 12th-ranked Zsuzsanna Fodor in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Rose resumes singles play -- and begins doubles play with senior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) -- on Thursday. Rose will be in singles action at 9 a.m. CT, while Rose and Prousis take the court in doubles at 3 p.m. CT. Rose eased past Mississippi's Ilona Somers in the first round, 6-1, 6-2. The sophomore played a tactical match, moving her opponent all over the court and uncorking winners when the situation called for them. The Big Ten Player of the Year and ITA National Player to Watch mixed in solid net play and delicate lobs with powerful forehands to down the unseeded Rebel. Rose used a break to take an early 1-0 lead in the first set. She dominated the second game, only giving up one point, to hold serve and take a 2-0 lead. Rose took advantages off three deuce points to eventually break Somers and open up a 3-0 advantage. After Rose and Somers both held serve to make the score 4-1, Rose put up a perfect game on her serve to go up 5-0. She broke the Rebel to take the first set, 6-1. The two stayed on serve through the early stages of the second frame, but Rose went up 3-1 with a break. The set stayed on serve until the final game when the Wildcat notched a break to take the second set, 6-2. Rose out dueled Somers on the final point like she had done through the entire match, making the Rebel move side-to-side and up to the net and back until finally putting the match away with an overhead smash. Rose faces VCU's Tatsiana Uvarova in Thursday's second round at 9 a.m. CT. While Rose was crusing in her first set, Murray was opening up an early 5-0 lead on the 12th-ranked Fodor. Murray painted the lines with several winners and used two breaks to extend her lead. The freshman faced a break point of her own, but used an ace to erase Fodor's advantage and won the game to keep her opponent from seizing momentum in the opening frame. Fodor managed to take three games from Murray, but the freshman finally converted on her third set point to take the first stanza, 6-3. Murray had a break point opportunity at 40-30 with the second set tied at 1-1, but Fodor responded to hold serve and would then break Murray to take a 3-1 lead. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year held serve on her next two chances, but she could not recover the break and fell 6-3 in the second set. The Wildcat quickly fell in an 0-1 hole when Fodor broke in the opening game. The Cal Bear held for a 2-0 advantage and would never relinquish control of the match. Fodor took the third set, 6-1, ending Murray's stellar freshman campaign. The Wildcat ends her season with a 29-13 record.
