ATHENS, Ga. - Senior Veronica Corning and sophomore Alicia Barnett of the Northwestern women's tennis team advanced to the round of 16 with a victory in the opening round of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Thursday afternoon.

Corning and Barnett, ranked 29th by the ITA, notched a 6-3, 6-4 win over the 34th-ranked duo of Caitlin McGraw and CeCe Witten of Kentucky at Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia. With the win, the NU pairing will take on the second-ranked team of Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase of Georgia, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over 36th-ranked Ester Goldfeld and Alyssa Smith of Duke, on Friday.

The opening set of the Wildcats' match was tied 3-3 after the teams traded breaks before Northwestern held serve, then broke the Kentucky duo before holding again to jump out to the early advantage.

Set No. 2 was knotted at 2-2 before McGraw and Witten held serve and then broke Barnett and Corning to take a 4-2 advantage. However, the Northwestern team finished strong, breaking Kentucky's serve twice en route to winning the final four games to win the match and advance on in the tournament.

The victory was the first by a Northwestern duo in the NCAA Doubles Championship since 2011 when Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton advanced to the quarterfinal round.
