ATHENS, Ga. - Both Northwestern singles entrants were eliminated Wednesday on the opening day of the NCAA Singles Championship at Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Seniors Veronica Corning and Belinda Niu both dropped their round of 64 match in their first appearances in the tournament.

Corning, ranked 49th by the ITA, squared off against 32nd-ranked Danielle Collins of Virginia in one of the opening matches of the morning. NU's first-team All-Big Ten selection was able to hang close with Collins in the opening set before Collins pulled away for a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

Niu, who is ranked 35th, earned a tough draw as she had to take on 15th-ranked Silvia Garcia of Georgia on her home courts. Garcia was able to come away with a 6-2, 6-2 win, ending outstanding collegiate career of Niu -- a four-time first-team All-Big Ten selection -- in the process.

Corning will team up with Alicia Barnett on Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Doubles Championship against Caitlin McGraw and CeCe Witten of Kentucky.
