EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern made quick work in disposing of Miami (Ohio) on Friday in the first-round of the 2014 NCAA women's tennis tournament. The Wildcats rolled to a 4-0 win over Miami at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.

With the victory, NU advances to Saturday's second-round match where the `Cats will face Notre Dame. The Irish were 4-0 winners over DePaul in Friday's opening round. Saturday's winner will move on to the Round of 16 next week in Athens, Ga.

Northwestern had previously eliminated the Red Hawks in first-round matches in 2009 and 2010.

The Wildcats wasted little time in grabbing the doubles point from Miami. Both of NU's ranked duos overwhelmed their opponents from the opening serve. At No. 1, Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett, ranked 29th, captured an 8-1 victory over Nimisha Mohan and Andreea Badileanu. Soon after, No. 89 Nida Hamilton and Maddie Lipp finished off an 8-2 win over Alix Thurman and Christine Guerrazzi to secure the match's first point for Northwestern.

The `Cats saw more of the same from the top of their singles lineup, earning dominant decisions from Corning and Belinda Niu. Corning, playing at No. 1, took the first set from Mohan by a 6-1 mark. She trailed 2-0 in the second before rattling off six straight games to win the match. Niu won her eighth match in a row with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Badileanu at No. 2.

Freshman Jillian Rooney ended the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ana Rajkovic at No. 6.

Friday's win was the 20th of the season for the Wildcats. NU has reached the 20-win mark in eleven straight seasons under head coach Claire Pollard.

Northwestern hosts Notre Dame tomorrow at noon at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
