    MADISON, Wis. - Northwestern clinched a second-place finish in the Big Ten with a 7-0 shutout of the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday. Regardless of Sunday's outcome, the Wildcats will receive a first-round bye in next week's conference tournament.

    The `Cats won five of six singles matches in straight sets and cruised through doubles play to handle the Badgers, extending NU's conference record to 9-1.

    Northwestern struck first on Saturday with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 in doubles. Alicia Barnett and Veronica Corning completed the quickest match, defeating Lauren Chypyha and Lauren Burich, 8-3. Belinda Niu and Brooke Rischbieth clinched the match's first point with an 8-2 victory over Sydney Rider and Becca Bailey.

    Senior Nida Hamilton increased her dual record to 11-1 with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Becca Bailey. Manon Peri has had a tremendous first season, including Saturday's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nova Patel in the fourth spot. Peri is now 8-1 in her first Big Ten campaign.

    Barnett scored the winning point for the Wildcats with a 6-3, 6-2 handling of Burich at the third position. The sophomore extended her team-high winning streak to six.

    NU scored three more wins as Lok Sze Leung, Corning and Niu took down their respective opponents. Niu leads the team with 14 wins in 2014.

    The Wildcats return to action tomorrow, traveling to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota in the regular-season finale. The match is scheduled to begin at noon at the Baseline Tennis Center.

    Northwestern will host the 2014 Big Ten Tournament at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. Action will begin on Thursday, April 24 with the championship match held on Sunday, April 27. More information will be available on NUsports.com following the conclusion of the regular-season.
