EVANSTON, Ill. -
With its third-consecutive 6-1 over a Big Ten opponent -- this time at Penn State Sunday afternoon -- No. 2 Northwestern continues to dominate the first half of its conference schedule. The Wildcats swept the doubles competition for the fourth-consecutive match, while their top-three singles players all won for the fourth time in a row, as well.
NU improves to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
The Wildcats' big three -- #3 Audra Cohen, #13 Cristelle Grier and #64 Alexis Prousis -- continued their assault on conference competition, all recording straight-set victories to improve 5-0 in the Big Ten. Grier and Prouis have each won their last eight matches, seven of which they have wrapped up in straight sets. Cohen has won her last four, all in straight sets.
Head Coach Claire Pollard shook up the bottom half of her lineup slightly, moving senior Andrea Yung up to No. 5 and sliding freshman Alexis Conill in at No. 6. Yung continued her tear through dual competition with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win, improving to 5-0 and 3-0 in the Big Ten. Conill came through with a 6-0, 6-4 win to notch her first-career conference victory. The freshman is 14-8 overall, 4-4 in duals.
Northwestern returns home Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10, to face Iowa and Minnesota, respectively. Both matches are slated for 11 a.m. and favorable weather could have the `Cats playing outside at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center for the first time this year.
