EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second time this season No. 14 Northwestern and No. 25 Nebraska hooked up for an exciting afternoon of Big Ten tennis. Sunday afternoon, the Cornhuskers were able to avenge their loss to the Wildcats from earlier this season with a 5-2 victory at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill.

As it did in the first meeting this season on Jan. 29, the Cornhuskers earned the doubles point Sunday. Northwestern's pair at No. 3 of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Brittany Wowchuk earned the first win of the day when they doubled-up Nebraska's Jennifer Holmberg and Janine Weinreich by a score of 8-4. Unfortunately they were the only victorious pair for NU.

Kate Turvy and Belinda Niu carried a nine-match winning streak as a doubles team into their match against Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt. The streak was finally snapped Sunday when the Huskers topped NU's dynamic duo, 8-3.

After each team had a win under its belt, the doubles point was decided by the outcome of the match at No. 1 between Northwestern's Nida Hamilton and Veronica Corning versus Nebraska's 26th-ranked Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein. The Wildcats surged out to an early lead, but they were unable to put away their formidable foes. The Huskers won the match, 8-5 to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Corning notched the first point of the afternoon for the Wildcats with her win at No. 4 singles over Geibert. The sophomore breezed past her opponent in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2, to remain undefeated in Big Ten play. It was also the fourth consecutive victory for Corning this year.

Weatherholt, ranked No. 58, avenged a loss to No. 16 Turvy earlier this season with a straight-set triumph of her own in the No. 1 singles match. Turvy fell 6-1, 6-2 as Nebraska regained a one-point lead in the match.

The cushion was short-lived for the Huskers because shortly after Turvy's match concluded, Stacey Lee put away Holmberg at No. 6. Lee was a late addition to the lineup and she rewarded head coach Claire's Pollard confidence by winning 6-1, 6-1. For Lee, the win is her third of the spring and the 45th dual win of her career.

Veresova took back the lead for Nebraska when she beat No. 61 Wowchuk in two intense sets. The Husker took the first set, 7-6 (6) and also needed an extra game to win the second stanza, 7-5.

A Wildcat match victory rested on the outcome of the singles matches at Nos. 3 and 5. At No. 5, Abu Mushrefova dropped a close first set 7-5 before rebounding to win the second, 6-2, and force a decisive third set. Her opponent, No. 101 Janine Weinreich, rushed out to a quick start before the NU junior rallied to take a 4-3 lead. Abu Mushrefova conceded the next three games, however, to fall 6-4. Weinreich's win secured the fourth point, clinching the match in Nebraska's favor.

The final result of the day saw Northwestern's Belinda Niu win the first set, 6-3, before falling in the second, 6-4. Niu burst out to a quick 3-0 advantage in the third set before Weinstein charged back to take a lead of her own. Niu tied the set at six games apiece, but she lost the tiebreaker, 7-4.

Both Northwestern and Nebraska now hold 2-1 marks in Big Ten play.

The 'Cats will now hit the road for their next five matches. The journey begins on Friday evening March 30 when Northwestern travels to Minneapolis to take on the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. The first serve of that match is scheduled for 6 p.m.
