EVANSTON, Ill. -
Fourth-ranked Northwestern knocked off ninth-ranked North Carolina Saturday afternoon, 4-3.
The Wildcats improve to 8-1 overall, while the Tar Heels fall to 8-3.
Northwestern won the doubles point early on with wins by freshman Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) at No. 1 and junior Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) and Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Burlington Central) at No. 3.
The `Cats then claimed three of six singles matches for the overall victory.
After dropping the first game of their doubles match, Cohen and Grier -- the nation's top-ranked duo -- hit cruise control and won sixth-straight. Two of the six came without dropping a single point.
The Tar Heels' Mojzis and Cline battled back to win the next three games though, cutting the lead to 6-4. What looked like a blow out early on turned into the decisive match as the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams split.
Cohen and Grier came through with an 8-5 win and Northwestern took a 1-0 advantage.
Cohen was the first to finish for the 'Cats at the No. 1 singles spot, disposing of 26th-ranked Aniela Mojzis 6-3, 6-1. Vladea followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4. Peisel secured the win for the 'Cats with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Northwestern is back in action in Combe Tennis Center at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 20 against fifth-ranked Duke.
