EVANSTON, Ill. - 13th-ranked Georgia knocked off fifth-ranked Northwestern in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Team Championship Thursday by a score of 5-2. The Wildcat drop to 3-1 on the season, while Georgia improves to 3-0.

The 'Cats were one of several teams to suffer upsets on the opening day of competition. While top-seeded Stanford advanced, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 UCLA and No. 7 Tulane were all upset. Kentucky's 5-2 win over second-seeded Clemson and Miami's 4-3 win over No. 3 UCLA mark the first time in the tournament's 18-year history that the No. 2 and 3 seeds have failed to advance past the first round.

The Bulldogs' Shadisha Robinson upset top-ranked Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) at the No. 1 singles position 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Robinson is ranked 10th in the nation.

Cohen and doubles partner Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) dropped their match to Robinson and Caroline Basu. It was Cohen and Grier's first loss as a doubles duo, dropping to 15-1 overall, including fall competition.

Junior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and doubles partner senior Kristi Roemer (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) improved to 3-0 on the year with an 8-4 win against Subbotina and Hyndman. That was the only doubles match the `Cats won, however, as Georgia took the opening team point by claiming the other two matches.

Prousis provided another victory for the `Cats in singles competition, defeating Evgenia Subbotina 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Junior Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) earned the only other singles win for Northwestern with a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 decision over Kelley Hyndman.

With the win, Georgia improves to 16-1 in USTA/ITA first round play, having won 16 in a row since losing in its first appearance in 1988.

Northwestern falls to 2-5 in USTA/ITA first round matches. The 'Cats also lost to the Bulldogs in last year's semifinals.

Northwestern will play consolation matches at 9 a.m. each of the next two days, with its opponents to be determined tonight.
