    Nationally-Ranked Tandem of Corning and Barnett Claim Doubles Title

    EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern wrapped up the Wildcat Winter Duals on Sunday by taking five of seven singles matches from the DePaul Blue Demons. The Wildcats No. 35 ranked duo of Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett did not have a match on Sunday but still won the doubles title by scoring 12 points over the first two days of the tournament.

    Corning narrowly missed winning the singles title as well. She scored 16 points in singles over the course of the weekend, but Alabama’s Maya Jansen finished the event with 17 to take the championship.

    Belinda Niu was very impressive on Sunday, knocking off a very good opponent in Patricia Fargas, 6-2, 6-2. Lok Sze Leung handily beat the only ranked Blue Demon, No. 52 Ana Vladutu, by a 6-4, 6-2 score.

    Maddie Lipp came from behind to win an exciting super breaker match. Lipp lost her first set 2-6 before winning the second 6-4. She then held off Rebeca Mitrea 10-8 in the super breaker third set for the victory.

    Jillian Rooney and Brooke Rischbieth both posted wins for the ‘Cats as well Sunday evening.

    NU took one doubles match from DePaul, as Hamilton and Lipp claimed a 7-5 victory over Lawson and Jasmin Kling.

    With the solid outing on Sunday, Northwestern completed the weekend with a 16-6 record in singles play, while posting an 11-2 mark in doubles.

    The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday, January 25 as the host of ITA Kickoff Weekend. NU plays Oklahoma State at 11 a.m.
