EVANSTON, Ill. - The beginning of the spring season offers the Northwestern women's tennis team an opportunity to start a fresh campaign toward a 16th-straight Big Ten title, and on Friday, in the first competition of the new year, the `Cats already looked to be in mid-season form. NU didn't lose a match during doubles play pitted against visiting schools Alabama, DePaul and Iowa. The team carried the momentum into singles play against conference foe Iowa, sweeping the Hawkeyes across the board.

Veronica Corning matched up against No. 56 Ruth Seaborne in one of the most competitive matches of the day and prevailed 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (5). All singles matches were played with a super breaker in place of a traditional third set.

Belinda Niu, ranked No. 105 by the ITA, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Shelby Talcott. Alicia Barnett also won handily over Morven McCulloch 6-2, 6-0.

Winning by large margins became a theme for the `Cats during Friday's matches, as Jillian Rooney, Lok Sze Leung, and Maddie Lipp all handed their opponents 6-2, 6-2 defeats.

Nida Hamilton posted a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Manon Peri won 6-1, 6-2.

The Wildcats' tandem of Corning and Barnett, ranked No. 35 in the nation in doubles play, scored a 7-5 win over Iowa before prevailing 7-6 against Alabama.

The tournament's champions will be decided based on a point-value system associated with each flight. The winner of each match received the corresponding point total with their flight. Friday's leaders in singles play were Corning and Patricia Fargas of DePaul with 8 points apiece. Corning and Barnett lead the way in doubles play with 8 points.

The round-robin style tournament continues on Saturday with NU facing No. 12 Alabama at 9 a.m.
