2012 Wildcat Invitational
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern wrapped up its first event of the spring on Sunday with five more victories on Sunday during the final day of the Wildcat Invitational bringing the total number of wins for the 'Cats to 20 on the weekend.
Sunday's final day pitted No. 12 Northwestern against UIC and DePaul against No. 65 LSU in a series of singles matches. Not only did the Wildcats claim victory in all five matches that they played, they did not drop a set in the process.
Veronica Corning concluded her first weekend with the Wildcats in fine fashion as she beat Polina Guimaraes in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Belinda Niu continued her spotless weekend with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Teona Tsertsuadze, 6-1, 6-0. Linda Abu Mushrefova blanked Jana Knoppe, 6-0, 6-0 and Natalie Edell bested Kathryn Sharples, 6-2, 6-4. In the afternoon's final match, Nida Hamilton beat Hayley Craig in the tightest match of the day between the two squads, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2).
The Wildcats will host their first dual meet of the spring on Saturday, January 21 when No. 16 Vanderbilt comes to Evanston for a showdown between ranked foes. Play will begin at the Combe Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
