2012 Wildcat Invitational
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Day two of the Wildcat Invitational saw the hosts from No. 12 Northwestern continue to play well from top to bottom as head coach Claire Pollard's bunch posted seven more victories against opponents from DePaul, No. 65 LSU and UIC at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill.
Saturday saw the Wildcats open with a trio of doubles victories against the DePaul Blue Demons. NU's top team of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton, ranked No. 6 in the latest Campbell's ITA rankings, paired up to dispense of Gia McKnight and Jasmin Kling, 8-5. Newcomer Veronica Corning played with Brittany Wowchuk as the duo downed Patricia Fargas and Rebeca Mitrea, 8-2. Last, but not least, Kate Turvy and Belinda Niu bested Kelsey Lawson and Carolin Neumann, 8-4.
Pollard switched up her tandems later in the day. Niu and Corning defeated LSU's Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger in a tightly contested affair, 9-7. Abu Mushrefova and Natalie Edell outlasted UIC's Elisa Simonetti and Jana Knoppe, 8-2. Wowchuk teamed with Hamilton, but the duo fell to McKnight and Mitrea from DePaul, 8-1.
Once the doubles action wrapped up, the Wildcats tangled with LSU Tigers in five singles matches. Corning, Niu and Hamilton were all victorious, while Abu Mushrefova and Edell fell short in their matches. Corning topped Olivia Howlett in a back-and-forth match, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7). Niu continued to move through the weekend unblemished as she toppled Kaitlin Burns, 6-1, 6-2. Hamilton claimed her first singles victory of the young season with a 6-2, 6-2, triumph over Rebecca Bodine.
