    1997-98 Northwestern Women's Tennis Preview

The youth movement. Eighth-year head coach Lisa Fortman welcomes back a young, but talented and experienced squad in 1997. The roster features just two upperclassmen in juniors Laura Guignon and Robin Porter and will rely heavily on the talent of its sophomore and freshman classes.

The 1997 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Katherine Nasser is expected to play at the No. 1 singles spot for the 'Cats. Last season, Nasser split time at the No. 1, 2 and 3 singles spots and posted a 21-8 overall record and a near-perfect 9-1 mark in the Big Ten.

Fortman hopes to get consistent play from Guignon and Porter. Guignon primarily played at the No. 2 spot and notched a 20-16 overall record, including an 8-2 mark in conference action. At No. 5 singles, Porter posted an 18-16 mark.

Sophomore Jennifer Lutgert and Leigh Weinraub are also among NU's top returnees. In only her first season as a 'Cat, Lutgert played at the No. 4 and 5 singles spots, while recording a 17-15 overall mark. Weinraub did not see action last season as she was recovering from a shoulder injury.

Look for freshman Colleen Cheng and Shannon Duffy to make an immediate impact on the Wildcat squad.
