EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head coach Jimmy Tierney announced today the addition of six new student athletes who signed National Letters of Intent to the Wildcats incoming Class of 2018 and the Northwestern women’s swimming and diving team.
The ‘Cats welcome freestylers Anna Keane (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) and Sydney Modeas (East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence). Northwestern is also excited to introduce three new multi-stroke swimmers, Aja Malone – freestyle and butterfly – (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona), Maddy Sims – freestyle and butterfly – (Downers Grove, Ill./Downer’s Grove), and Mary Warren – freestyle and breast stroke – (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead), in addition to diver Mashal Hashem (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill).
“We’re thrilled to add six very talented scholar-athletes to the Northwestern swimming and diving program for the 2014-15 season,” Northwestern head coach Jimmy Tierney
said. “These ladies have shown us their passion for their sport and overwhelmed us with their strong desire to share in our journey to success in and out of the pool. This group will immediately contribute performance-wise with their athletic talents but also add to the great team spirit that we are seeing with the current squad.”

Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill
High School: Team captain for two years…Varsity-lettered all four years…State of Maryland Champion (2013) … Washington Post 2nd Team (2013) … Winston Churchill Bulldog of the Year for Excellence in Leadership (2013) … Competed in Metropolitan, Divisional, Regional, County, and State meets…Member of MDC (2002-13) and DDC (2013-present)…National Qualifier since 2009 on Platform…Regional and Zones qualifier since 2008…14th place at 2013 Nationals … 13th place on 1-meter at 2013 Age Group … Qualifier for East Nationals.
Personal: Born Mashal Hasem… National Honors and Merit Scholars Society … Honor roll all four years … AP scholar… Daughter of Diana and David Hashem … Chose Northwestern over Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgetown, and NYU … Anticipated majors are political science and psychology … The only ranked diver in the nation with Afghan origin.
Diving Coach Alik Sarkisian’s Take: “Marshal’s been diving since she was six years old, where she trained with with Montgomery and Dominion Dive Club. She’s very excited to be part of the Wildcats swim and dive team and all of us can't wait to she her grow more as an athlete and as a student at Northwestern.”

Personal: Born Anna C. Keane … Daughter of Peter and Deborah Keane … Older brother, Jon, was member of Santa Clara’s Men’s Golf team, playing professionally for three years after graduation; went on to start his career in finance … Chose Northwestern over Rice, Airforce Academy and Liberty University … Anticipated major is biochemical engineering … Home-educated for 12 years … Junior and senior year of high school participated in a dual credit program at a community college.
Coach Tierney’s Take: “Anna comes to Evanston from Bellevue Swim Club where she has excelled in the 50-200 Freestyle range. She will have an immediate impact on the shorter freestyle events plus enhance our relays as well. Aside from her swimming, Anna plays two musical instruments and has been involved in drama and debate. She won the Washington State high school championship in 50 free last weekend.”

Personal: Born Aja Elizabeth Malone … Daughter of Ken and Jenet Malone … Chose Northwestern over Georgia, Duke, and Missouri…former teammate of current Northwestern breast stroker Julianne Kurke.
Coach Tierney’s Take: “Aja hails from the one of the most highly successful club teams in the US, Swim Atlanta. She is coached by former Olympic gold medalist Doug Gjertson, a former swimmer from this club. We targeted Aja early on because of her enormous potential in the butterfly and sprint freestyle events. Her impact on this team will be significant because of her ability to impact 4-5 relays immediately.”

East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence
High School: A four year varsity letterwiner at Clarence High School, where she captained the team her senior season…3-time ECIC Conference Champion, 3-time section VI champion…took 2nd place in the NYS state meet in 2012…2-time All American in the 500 free (2011-12) and 3-time All-American in the 200 and 400 free relay…competed for STAR Program Swimming, being named 2013-14 AAA Swimmer … selected to 2014 March Speedo Championship Team and 2014 March Junior National Team … competed in NCSA Junior National Championships (2011-13) and New York High School Championships (2011-13) … Swam in Speedo Champions Series (2012-13) and New York Girls Federation Championships (2012-13).
Personal: Father, Harry, graduated from Northwestern…chose Northwestern over Michigan, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Virginia Tech…National Honor Society member and four-year high honor roll student…major is undecided…has three younger siblings.
Coach Tierney’s Take: “Sydney was another young lady that won over the team and staff during her official visit to NU. She will easily blend in with this team right away. We believe that she has her best swimming in front of her and we are very excited to add her to our young group of middle distance freestylers. We have tried several times to draw some talent from the successful STAR program in Buffalo, NY, and we are so thrilled to grab our first one.”

Coach Tierney’s Take: “We are very excited to add one of the local stars from the state of Illinois and Downers Grove North High school Having been tutored by the highly successful coach Judy Busse, Maddy comes from a family rich with swimming success, where her father and siblings were all highly accomplished swimmers. She brings an infectious smile and positive spirit that will benefit the entire team. Her contributions in the pool will come in the 100-200 fly and middle distance free events, plus free relays.”
Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead High School
High School: Talented sprinter…Won Wisconsin Division I state title in 50 freestyle, swimming 23.29…placed 3rd in 100 freestyle, swimming a then-career best 51.34…Anchored two state champion relays for Arrowhead High School…Posted 50 free times of 22.98 in yards and 26.85 in the long course as a junior…posted 51.37 time in 100 yard free and 1:52.31 in 200 yard free…
Personal: Competed for the Lake County Swim Team
Coach Tierney’s Take: “Early on in our recruitment of Mary, we saw the passion she had for Northwestern University. She showed us all her strong desire to be a part of the Wildcat family, both as an athlete and a scholar student. Mary has tremendous potential as a sprint freestyler and breaststroker. She will add much needed depth to our sprint corps and also impact relays right away. We are fortunate to have one of Arrowhead High School and Lake Country Swim Club’s most successful athletes.”
