EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Shelly Patton (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week following her performance last weekend in the Wildcats' exciting come-from-behind victory at their own six-team TYR Invitational.

Patton scored 88 points to be NU's high-point scorer in the meet and second overall, allowing the Wildcats to vault Illinois on the final day of competition and win the meet. Patton's highlight swim came in the 400 IM when she earned the first NCAA 'B' provisional qualifying time of her career with a first-place 4:18.08. She went on to finish second in both the 200 and 50 back and third in the 100 breast.

Though she did not qualify for the championship final of the 200 IM, her 2:02.48 to win the consolation final was the fastest time of any swimmer in the event. Patton earned spots on NU's all-time top times list in the 100 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM with her performances at the TYR.

Patton is the first Wildcat to win the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award after it was instituted midway through the 2011-12 season.
