Hupman Wins Gold, Sets Meet Record in 4x100m Freestyle Relay at World University Games
Aug. 9, 2007 BANGKOK, Thailand -- Northwestern senior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) swam the anchor leg on Team USA's 4x100m freestyle relay Thursday evening at the 2007 World University Games, helping the team twice break the Universiade record en route to the USA's first swimming gold medal of the Games. She then earned individual silver in the 100m freestyle during Friday's action and another relay gold with the 4x200m free relay on Saturday. The relay swam a meet record of 3:41.42 to qualify first during the preliminary heats, then re-established the record with a 3:40.85 to capture gold. In the finals, Germany opened up a lead, but Hupman chased down the Germans with a 54.71 split in her anchor leg to catapult the USA to gold. On Friday, Hupman qualified first during the prelims of the 100m freestyle, swimming a 55.42. She then came back to swim a 55.36 in the finals to win the silver medal behind Germany's Britta Steffen, the current world-record holder. During Saturday's action, Hupman swam the third leg of the 4x200m freestyle relay in the preliminary heat. She then yielded to a teammate in the finals, which Team USA won to give Hupman her second gold of the 2007 Games. The gold medals are the third and fourth of Hupman's career after the Wildcat won two as a member of relays at the 2005 Games. Her silver medal Friday brought her overall career medal count to five. Northwestern head coach Jimmy Tierney is serving as an assistant with the USA delegation in Thailand. On the men's side, NU graduate Matt Grevers and head coach Bob Groseth are representing the USA.
