EVANSTON, Ill. -- Rising seniors Marybeth Hall (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) and Meredith King (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) along with rising junior Jackie Powell (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) have been named team captains for the 2012-13 season, head coach Jimmy Tierney announced today (May 23).
Hall is a multiple-time Academic All-Big Ten award winner who was a key member of Northwestern's butterfly stroke group and freestyle relays in 2011-12. She earned NCAA `B' provisional qualifying times with the 200 and 400 free relays during the fall portion of last season. Over her career she has displayed versatility, ranking among NU's top swimmers in breast, fly, individual medley and freestyle events at some point during her time as a Wildcat.
King is a multiple-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree who also has been a versatile leader for the Wildcats over her career. She has ranked on NU's top times list in no less than five different events in each of her three seasons in Evanston, most recently winning the bonus final of the 200 fly at the 2011 Big Ten Championships with an NCAA `B' cut and career-best time. She swam with NU's top 800 free relay in 2011-12 as well.
Powell has been one of Northwestern's top freestyle swimmers since stepping foot on campus two years ago. In 2011-12, she ranked among NU's best at every distance from the 50 to the 1,000, also swimming with all three of the Wildcats' top freestyle relays at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. She, too, is an Academic All-Big Ten winner.
Northwestern is coming off a return to NCAA Championships competition in 2011-12, a season in which it also recorded 20 or more Academic All-Big Ten honors for the third-straight year.
