EVANSTON, Ill. -- With dual meets complete and the regular season closed, Northwestern has its sights set on racing fast and touching first Feb. 20-23 at the 2013 Big Ten Championships hosted by Minnesota in Minneapolis.
While the Wildcats compete to win in regular season duals, each segment of the year is mapped out with one goal in mind: to be at their very best come conference championships time. Now, Northwestern's focus is on climbing the league standings and qualifying as many 'Cats as possible for the NCAA Championships in March.
A pair of seniors represent Northwestern's best shots at winning a Big Ten title and also at moving on to the NCAA meet. Sprint freestyler Taylor Reynolds qualified for the NCAA Championships one year ago and is having an even better season in 2012-13. She enters this week as the No. 2 overall seed in the 100 free and the No. 3 seed in the 50 free. Diver Felicitas Lenz finished runner-up on the 10-meter platform last year to earn All-Big Ten honors, and already has broken her career-high point total in the event during the 2012-13 regular season.
Several other returning Wildcats know what it takes to succeed at a Big Ten meet and are seeded to score, including Erin Sosdian in the 1,650 free, Becca Soderholm in both individual medleys, Meredith King in the 200 fly and 400 IM, Jackie Powell and Katie McCullough in the freestyles and Cosima Lenz on the diving boards.
NU has a deep and talented freshman class that can make its full force known this week. Headlined by backstroke specialist Karen Turner, who already has an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time in the 200 back, NU also can see points from distance freestylers Ellen Anderson and Emily Launer. Julianne Kurke leads the way in the breast.
