    Northwestern Women's Swimming Captures Polar Bear Invitational Crown

    TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Northwestern women's swimming team travelled to Arizona State on Saturday afternoon to take part in the Polar Bear Invitational and walked away with the four-team tournament title. NU won the event with a score of 202. Arizona St. was second with 176 points, Oregon St. was third with 72 and Lafayette finished fourth with eight points.

    NU won eight events, all by different swimmers. Kelly Igoe got things started with a win in the 200 free in a time of 1:54.58. Dominique Diezi was second in 1:54.94. Amy Balcerzak and Mary Beth Ellis were finished one-two in the 100 breast. Balcerzak finished in 1:05.79 and Ellis touched in 1:07.79. Cathy Lundin took the 200 fly in 2:10.04 and Alexis Keto was second in 2:13.17. Ashley Mosher and Allyson Bowman were first and second respectively in the 50 free with times of 24.10 and 24.68. Brianne Fowles won the 500 free in 5:06.18 and finished second to Bowman in the 100 fly with a time of 59.86. Bowman won the event in 59.00. Diezi (51.66), Bowman (53.25), Mosher (53.56) and Igoe (53.74) swept the top four spots in the 100 free and Joy Stover won the 1650 free in a time of 17:11.13.

    Northwestern improves to 2-3 on the year, 1-2 in the Big Ten. They are in action next on Sat., Jan. 17 when they host Auburn and Tennessee in a double-dual at the Norris Aquatics Center at 11 a.m.
