HONOLULU -- Northwestern got three NCAA 'B' standards from a pair of swimmers in a 133-93 dual meet victory over Hawaii during its training trip to the 50th state. The swimming portion of the meet took place Tuesday, Dec. 19, while the diving events were held Wednesday, Dec. 20.
Two 'Cats turned in NCAA 'B' standard swims in the meet, impressive considering the rigorous work regimine the team has put in so far during the trip. Freshman Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) won the 50 free with a 'B' time of 23.41 and captured the 100 free with a 'B' effort of 50.12, while classmate Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) came out on top of the 500 free with a 'B' cut of 4:52.78.
Wong's swim in the 100 free vaulted her all the way to fourth on Northwestern's all-time top-10 list in the event.
The meet began with a Northwestern win in the 200 medley relay. Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines), Jessie Bailis (Omaha, Neb./Millard North), Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) comprised the relay that finished in 1:45.18.
Freshmen Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) and Mary Beth Francis (San Diego, Calif./Mission Viejo) then finished second and third, respectively, in the 1000 free before junior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) grabbed the top spot in the 200 free with a 1:50.76.
Bailis finished second to Wong in the 50 free with a 24.15, then four 'Cats took second through fifth in the 200 IM. Braun and
Stacy Congdon (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) followed with a 1-2 sweep of the 100 fly. Braun swam a 56.31 and Congdon turned in a 57.57.
Hupman was second to Wong in the 100 free with a 51.18, before Szymanski took second in the 100 back with a 58.81. Shishkoff took second in the 500 free behind Kocsis with a 4:55.75.
Bailis, Fry and Jill Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 breast. Bailis swam a 1:04.20, Fry had a 1:05.17 and Forster turned in a 1:09.30.
Wong, Braun, Fry and Hupman concluded Tuesday's action with a 1:35.10, the fastest time in the 200 free relay.
In the diving events, which took place Wednesday, Dec. 20, junior Beth Campbell (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick) captured second place on both boards for the Wildcats. Freshman Tania Lyerly (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) was third on the 1-meter board.
