MINNEAPOLIS - Four Northwestern swimmers will take part in Friday's finals after their morning prelim swims Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Julianne Kurke swam a career best 1:01.36, which qualified for an NCAA “B” Cut time in the 100 breast. She finished at No. 9, just missing the championship final featuring the top eight times. But Kurke’s finish still earned a spot in the scoring consolation final in the evening session.

Senior Becca Soderholm advanced to earn a second swim in the scoring consolation final of the 400 yard IM, swimming a 4:16.07.

Her time was good for No. 11 to advance to the consolation round. She trimmed 0.20 seconds from her career best in the 400 IM, and the fastest time by an NU swimmer this season. The time also qualified for an NCAA “B” Cut time.

Freshman Lauren Abruzzo also earned an additional swim in Friday’s final session, going 4:22.80 in the 400 yard IM to advance to the bonus round, finishing at No. 20.

In the 100 back, freshman Lackey Locke advanced to the scoring consolation final with a NCAA “B” Cut time of 54.60 in the 100 back, finishing No. 13 to earn another swim in the evening portion.

NU's divers still are competing in the 3-meter springboard prelims during the afternoon.

Freshman Ellen Stello (4:27.60) and sophomore Brooke Wanser (4:33.87) also placed in the 400 yard IM for the ‘Cats.

In the 100 yard fly, Valerie Nubbe (57.07) and Fallon Fitzpatrick (58.10) posted season best times.

Senior Jackie Powell and Erin Sosdian both swam season best times in the 200 free, with Powell going 1:49.62 and Sosdian posting a time of 1:49.76

While diving preliminaries continue throughout the afternoon, finals action gets underway at 6:30 p.m. CT tonight.
