    Abruzzo Advances to Big Ten Consolation Finals in 500 Yard Free

    MINNEAPOLIS – In the first prelim session of the Big Ten Championships Thursday, freshman Lauren Abruzzo advanced to the scoring consolation final.  

    Abruzzo posted the top time for the ‘Cats to begin Thursdays prelims session in the with a 4:46.03 time, finishing 13th overall among 64 swimmers and has the opportunity to earn points for Northwestern.  

    In the second prelim, the 200 yard IM, freshman Lacey Locke earned a second swim, finishing No. 22 with a time of 2:01.73 to advance to the bonus final.

    NU's divers still are competing in the 1-meter springboard prelims during the afternoon.

    NU swimmers continued to cut significant times off their previous season bests. Senior Erin Sosian swam the 500 free in 4:50.26, besting her season best time by nearly five seconds. Sosian finished in 24th place to sneak into the bonus final.

    Sophomore Emily Launer followed with a career best time of 4:50.62, trimming more than six seconds off her previously fastest time. Ellen Anderson shaved 90 seconds off her season’s best time to finish the 500 free in 4:51.57. Freshman Megan Purdy finished the 500 free with a career best time of 4:53.29, taking down her previous top time by more than five seconds. Senior Sarah Goss cut her time to 4:58.66.

    Senior Becca Soderholm placed second for the ‘Cats  in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:03.17. Also in the 200 yard IM, Madeleine Klichowski swam a season best 2:08.13.

    In the 50 yard free, freshman Annika Winsnes led NU with a season best time of 23.48. Julia Pratt, Valerie Nubbe, Jackie Powell, Jackie Doyle, Julianne Kurke and Lacey Smith all also lowered their season best times in the 50 free.

    While diving preliminaries continue throughout the afternoon, finals action gets underway at 6:30 p.m. CT tonight.
