IOWA CITY, Iowa-- Northwestern wrapped up the first preliminary session of the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships by placing one swimmer in the consolation finals and another pair in the bonus final of their respective events Thursday. The Wildcats also placed a pair of alternates for tonight's fields.

Taylor Reynolds (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) placed 16th in the 50 freestyle, Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) finished 17th in the 200 individual medley, and Jackie Powell (Madison, Wis./James Madison) swam 23rd in the 500 freestyle.

Fallon Fitzpatrick (Delray Beach, Fla./BR Community) was the first of seven Wildcats to swim the 500 yard freestyle at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The sophomore narrowly missed out on a career-best with a time of 5:06.69, but was more than 10 seconds quicker than her seeded time.

Beth Loe (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) swam in heat three and she turned in the second fastest time of the morning in 4:56.09 to that point. About midway through the race she powered past Wisconsin's Kelly Winckler swimming to her left and held on to the advantage for the duration of the event.

Northwestern's Megan Goss (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) and Lauren Clifford (Pollock Pines, Calif./El Dorado) were placed together in heat five. Goss, a sophomore, swam the fastest 500 free of her career in a time of 4:55.60. Clifford, a junior, did the same at a career-best clip 4:56.18.

The seventh heat was the tightest of the event to that point and the Wildcats came out of it with the top two times. Powell held off a charging Erin Sosdian (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Prep) in a personal-best time of 4:49.56. Sosdian finished the race in 4:50.16, nearly six seconds faster than her previous best effort.

Powell finished the preliminary round in 23rd place to earn a spot in the bonus final, while Sosdian claimed the first of two alternate spots for that event.

Junior Meredith King (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) was the final 'Cat in the pool for the 500 freestyle. She, too, turned in her best time of the season at 4:51.57.

Madeleine Klichowski (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) was the first NU swimmer in the pool for the 200 yard individual medley. She finished second in the second heat of the event with a time of 2:07.64. Sophomore Becca Soderholm (Madison, Wis./Madison East) dropped close to four seconds off her seed time to post a career-best pace of 2:02.69. Jacquie Godbe (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) turned in a preliminary time of 2:02.61 swimming in heat seven.

Patterson continued the trend of swimming a personal best with a time of 2:01.21 in the event to earn a spot in the bonus final this evening. Godbe will be the second alternate for the event.

The morning session concluded with 50 yard freestyle. Of Northwestern's seven swimmers in the event, Reynolds posted the top effort in a time of 22.99 seconds, an NCAA `B' cut standard. With that time, Reynolds earned a spot in the consolation finals later tonight. Freshman Valerie Nubbe (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville) placed second amongst her teammates with a time of 23.74, just ahead of senior Sheila O'Neill (Dunwoody, Ga./Marist School), who clocked in at 23.76.

The one meter diving preliminaries and consolation finals will begin at 1 p.m. this afternoon. Mary Kate Campbell (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick), Cosima Lenz (Altadena, Calif./Polytechnic School) and Felicitas Lenz (Altadena, Calif./Polytechnic School) are each scheduled to compete for NU.

The finalists from Thursday's morning session and the one meter dive will compete tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m. Live results will be available through the Official 2012 B1G Championships site, which is linked at the top of this page.
